Meddling with Medlars
And so we come to the end of another foraging year, and that means we have been picking Medlars.
Medlars? I year you ask - what sort of fruit is that?
Well, Medlars are an ancient and massivley under appreciated fruit which is harvested in November, held until they have softened in aprocess called bletting, and then used initially to make Medlar Jelly. This is a sublime taste which includes elements of apple and caramel and when used as a jelly, is fabulous as both a sweet topping on crumpets and also as a relish on poultry.
And then with the flavour infused in Medlar Jelly, we sieve out the flesh and use it to flavour our popular Cool Curry Chutney, a tasty chutney with all the taste of Curry, but without the heat.
So this odd looking fruit which was so beloved by Shakespeare delivers not once but twice! Whichever you take it, the humble Medlar will leavle you wanting more.
